According to legend, Han Zhongli was a general during the
Han Dynasty (206 B.C. – 220 A.D.). After being shown the
way of Taoism by Li Tieguai, he went into the mountains to
cultivate himself. Stories credit him with killing a dangerous
tiger with a flying sword, and turning rocks into gold to
distribute among the poor. After many years, both Han
Zhongli and his brother Han Jianyue became immortals.
Han Zhongli also introduced three of the other members of the Eight Immortals to the way of
Taoism. He converted Lan Caihe by challenging him to jump from a bridge, saved Lü
Dongbin from committing suicide, and showed Cao Guojiu that he was still clinging to the
material world he was supposed to have left behind.
